A central role of priest/pastor is to give pastoral care or spiritual direction. This means helping men, women and children grow deeper in relationship and union with the Lord.
I coming to think that my role as pastoral caregiver/cure of souls/spiritual director is not primarily about helping people do better in the Christian journey. My role is to be at least one, real, concrete, human voice who says, "God loves, forgives and accepts you in Jesus Christ. Rejoice!" My role is to be one, real, concrete human voice that lives this truth -- an icon of grace or what Fr. Paul Zahl calls, "one way love."
I am praying that I will more and more become this kind of priest.
